Police Reform

Tell us what YOU think

Do you know who your local police officers are?
If you had a concern, would you know who to go to?
Do you know how well your force is performing?

Policing affects us all, from anti-social or nuisance behaviour, to serious crime or terrorism. A major programme of police reform means we now have record police numbers, while your chance of being a victim of crime is at a 20-year low.

But where do we go from here?

We believe that a 21st century police service needs to be firmly rooted in the community. The Home Secretary David Blunkett has set out a vision of society where police officers are a visible and accessible part of the community. People have a clear understanding of how their local force takes decisions, spends its money and what it achieves. In this vision, policing is part of the daily life of the community, and the community is part of the solution, with individuals, groups and businesses as active partners with the police.

How can we achieve this? How can the police become more accessible, responsive and accountable for what they do? And how can stronger links be built between the police and all parts of the community?

In this (online) leaflet, we set out some ideas and questions for the future of policing. You know what would work best in your community.

We want to know what you think.
